You could do alot with the sound card to control the frequency, and measure the response.
Amplification is the fiddly bit.
Golddigger is it really a PI ?

That's entirely up to the person programming the sound card output. If you send a pulse out, have a delay and then read the response on the same coil analyzing the timing, that would qualify it as a PI unit. Using two coils, it could be set up as a VLF/TR unit. That's the seductive nature of using an ultimately reprogrammable system like a computer. In the original poster's  idea, he speaks of using a coil as big as a car. He'd have to have at least that much of a "life support system" for his PC to come along and to drag his huge coil around.
