A PROJECT THAT I AM CONTEMPLATING A METAL DETECTOR USING A LAP TOP TO DO THE PROCESSING WITH A LARGE COIL SAY 18 FEET BY 4 FEET. WITH ALL DO RESPECT I AM NOT LOOKING FOR ANOTHER METHOD TO MY MADNESS BUT BY ALL MEANS ANY INPUT IS APPRECIATED.WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO DO IS RUN MY LAPTOP OR POSSIBLE A XEON DUAL PROCESSOR WORK STATION USING A PROGRAM THAT IS OPEN SOURCE WRITTEN BY THE HAM RADIO GUYS CALLED  SPECTRUM LAB FOR SIGNAL PROCESSING .THIS PROGRAM USES SOUND CARD INPUTS AND OUTPUTS FOR TX AND RX OF SIGNAL . I WOULD LIKE TO INTERFACE THE OUT PUT THROUGH A CAR AUDIO AMP TO THE TX COIL AND INTERFACE THE INPUT TO THE RX COIL. TO THIS I WILL ADD A GPS THAT CAN BE TRIGGERED BY THE SOFTWARE FOR MAPPING TO GOOGLE EARTH THROUGH A ONBOARD CELLULAR CONNECTION FOR REAL TIME DATA LOGGING AND MAPPING. I KNOW ITS A LITTLE OVERKILL BUT i AM WORKING WITH WHAT I HAVE ON HAND ,A FEW TALENTED FREINDS AND $20. ALSO IN MY WORLD BIGGER IS BETTER.

Hi Dweat1

How are you planning to move that coil around?

The detector is the software. the program is open source its call Spectrum Lab
I am trying to figure out the software .I set up the receiver coil to a preamp and ran it into the sound card inputs .on the trial testing in my house using the signal from the wiring in the
house for my transmitted signal The received signal was responding to a wrench at 3 foot .
i am not that familiar with setting up the software to function the way i want it to.  Idea

Hi Dwest1

Sounds like a nice toy (figure of speech) so tell me where do you get this spectrum lab? I'd like to see what can be done with it. Also what type of amp did you use? If you have a schematic or block diagram could you post it to me that way I could try out thing on my side and let you know what I come up with.

Regards Xavier

It's terribly expensive. Darn. I missed April Fool's day. Truth? It's free. Go here:

Enjoy. All you need is a sound card and you have a fully functional, audio frequency range spectrum analyzer. Add a coil and a couple of 555 timers and you have a fully functioning PI detector with graphic analysis.
