I picked it up on ebay thinking that it would be a begining for a VLF but most of the VLF's I've seen have coils in the milli henries not the micro henries so I set it aside and just came up with the thought for the "wild idea".  It could, might be hot property that some ding bat ripped off from the guard or something.

The key is the total impedance of the detector. You need to know much more about things such as internal capacitance in the TX and TX section. I believe that your coil is for a VLF/TR machine in the 300khz range.

Unlike Dell Winders I bow to your superior knowlege. Wink  Like Homefire said it's hard to figger out whan the website doesn't give operating Frequency or much else.

Just as an aside is everyone ready for their "End of Days" party? Funny

Gramps, can you measure the coil's inductance? If you can get an accurate reading there is a chance we can deduce the frequency of the machine it works with. Knowing we have to be detuned by at least 3db from center (better at 6db) we can give you a range in which it will probably work. Once you are fairly certain of that range, you can see if it works on your machine.

Okie doakie, the larger coil, I assume because of physical size, is 453uH @ 2.56 ohms and smaller one is 248uH @.83 ohms.
Measurements taken at the end of a 68" cable with no legend on the cable as to who made it, so ohms per foot is a big
question mark.  Wire ga. is about 17 stranded.  That's all the info I have on the unit.

We still don't know if it has a Cap in the coil for tuning.

With those numbers it could be PI or VLF but I think GD is correct.   VLF.

Take it to your dentist and have him  X-Ray it!   LOL

Yeh and bleed through the wallet for it, it's like a machinist I had do some work for me said "to turn on a machine it cost you $80.00" and that was 5 or six yrs. ago.  It doesn't act as if there is a cap in there, with an analog ohm meter the needle jumps right over no acting like it's charging a cap.

If it was Parallel you would not see much because the values would be so little..

Thanks, Gramps. I'll plug this in tomorrow and see what I come up with. Presuming a few things like the range of frequencies, it will be possible to extrapolate a small spectrum which may help you determine the coil's use.

I have an old hard drive which I need to plug in which has some spreadsheets I need. I keep my old computer drives in an index arrangement so I can dig up old data when I need it. As you might imagine, I don't use that kind of calculation spreadsheet very often and have to go back at least 4 or 5 drives to find it.

Cool "O" mucho thanks, whilist I have you'ses ear i'm sure you are aquainted with Carl Moreland's Hammerhead, well I have an HH 1, rev. C, that I got from Silverdog in the UK over a year ago.  I assembled it and ran into a problem with The 1 ohm resistor (R10) sending up war clouds and poof.  I went through several resistors after making changes, I contacted Carl at Geotech and he gave me some things to look at they didn't help so I put it away to let my head cool off.  I recently came across it and decided to tackle it again, after reaquainting myself and my nose with the problem.  I started reading the manual and found a diagram of the osc./tx section said to be suggested by Eric Foster so I reconfigured the board to that diagram.  Now without a coil it powers up with no smoke but hook up a coil and more smoke signals, the IRF740 must be conducting great guns but why?  Got any thoughts?
