Go Up Go Down

Hi THunting diy'ers and interested crew, I am going to start a project of building a ROV to hopefully help the Side Scan Bouy's have "more fun", I'll post as I build.  If you want to jump in and have fun as this thread grows please do. Hopefully also see that ROV's are not only for mega companies etc( maybe we might not get to 1000feet  Shocked but we will have fun!). There is a lot of brain power sitting in this community,so all those members who can add wisdom and insight to the designs as they develop please add some constructive comment and support.

  thanks Machineman

Ambitious project but it begs for a specification, as do all major projects like this.

Define what your goals are in terms that are not so nebulous as what you say here. When you take on a project like this, you can't "pitch" it like a movie trailer or TV commercial. You have to define your objectives. Doing it by committee isn't the way to go but it can give you some ideas to use.

Start out by defining your project in brief. Until now, I have seen your posts and wondered what you had in mind. Now, after reading this one, it seems as it you are wanting to create an underwater machine. That's not even absolutely clear because a depth of 1000 feet can also mean cave crawling.

Good luck with your project.

Is it going to have a few MegaWatt Sonic Cannons to defend it's self from the Giant Octopuses  ?   I like that stuff!    LOL

Are you going to base if from a Hummingbird Depth Scanner?

Home Built ?

Autonomous?

Tow?

Need more Input as the little robot said.

Great some direction from the start thanks GD, this is what I mean there is a lot of wisdom in the community, that can be keeping a eyeball on the kids "playing" .

Round Number 1:
BRIEF OUTLINE SPEC for ROV.
Depth 25m ( with a factor of safety? )
High Pressure PVC pipe/ composites /Engineering plastics and Ali as materials
100m Umbilical
DC feed from surface (investigate high volts to get cable thinner look for spec for safety aspects)
2x video feed; 2 x data
4 x thrusters ( DC )
depth pressure sensor
LED lights
panable (steerable) camera mount
"flight" control to stabilise ROV in motion and position holding in current.

There are two ways to post pictures or images here on each message. You can upload after selecting either the full Reply or a Preview after you type in the Quick Reply box. Then attach an image that is small in size but easily readable when expanded to full size. The forum software will take care of making the thumbnail. The second way is to get an account at PhotoBucket or one of those places where photos can be stored. You can then embed the URL to the photo in your message which adds it into the body of the message. Either way is all right.

Years ago, I experimented with audio signals under water for remote control. Since the movement of an ROV is very slow, it may work as long as you have a fail safe homing device inside for accidental signal loss. Audio signals around 200khz can travel for miles in the ocean water and are above the hearing range of sea creatures. A fail safe might include a deployable floatation device on a tether for when the signal is lost. Shut the motor off, deploy the balloon and look for the bright orange ball to recover your machine.
