Hi All,

I picked up a Garrett international S-2 at a flea market, sold as faulty

I realised it is a respected name in metal detectors, but as i'm new to this

I don't even know what type of detector this is ?

Anyway when switched on it just emits an unchanging tone from the speaker

regardless of switch positions or settings.

Does anyone have any info / schematic !

Thanks.............mintoe

It's going to be hard to find schematics for any Garrett machine because they guard them so zealously. However, I have a lot of experience at repairing them without the schematics and what you have happening has two major causes. All Garrett detectors use a split power supply. Check all battery connections for corrosion and/or broken connections. You also want to check for corrosion and open wires on the boards and control panel.

The second major cause is the coil being open. Check for low resistance on both the TX and RX coils. Then check the wiring between the coil connector and the main board. Most failures on metal detectors are mechanical (wires, switches, etc.) unless they have been soaked in salt water or some other tragedy befalls them. Infant mortality on components normally happens in the first few hours of use so if the machine worked before, it might not be component failure.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hi GoldDigger1950,

Thanks for the reply,
I've had a look inside and done a few checks,
The battery connections wires etc all seem fine
but there is evidence of the semiconductors removed/checked
as the soldering is different around the pins.
I checked the coils for continuity and checked their inductance
which is 1.561mH & 714uH
The active components are:
2 off 2N3906
1 off 2N3904
1 off BC307
1 off 2N2484
1 off NSDU45 Darlington
1 off MC14016
2 off LM358
1off LM393

on a small seperate pcb there is a CA3160s and a 2n4584
The search coil is a Garrett Co Planar, deep scan TR discriminator
I downloaded the owners manual.

At the worse I've got a box to build one in Undecided

All the best .........mintoe
