I heard that Garrett offers a service of refurbishing their older detectors. Does anyone know if this is true, and have any of you fine folks had any experience with Garrett in this respect?

Thanks,

Nick

I know that they will service (tune-up) their older detectors and will add any updates if they are available. Contact Bradk@garrett.com, he is in the service dept. and has always answered all my questions. sometimes faster than i was even ready for.

I have a Garrett Ultra GTA 500. I bought it from a guy who stored it for a couple of years with the batteries in it. I had to get new battery holders, Garrett gave me a couple, the old ones were rusted away. After a couple of months of use the detector became erratic and the tone would continue on instead of stopping after you passed the coil over a target, the meter ID skipped around on targets also. I sent it to Garrett, they replaced a diode, replaced the coil, gave me a new battery holder box and re-calibrated it. It lasted about two weeks and started doing the same thing again. They charged me $75.00 and I still have the same problem. They also promised to call me before the work was done with an estimate and never did. I now own two Whites metal detectors and the defective Garrett. I had owned two Garretts previously. I don't know if my experience is typical or not. I just know that I am no longer a diehard Garrett man.

Sadly,... it happens.
I make a bit of a living repairing guitar amps (mostly tube jobs).
Now and then you will get one, no matter how much cash and repair time you throw at it will never be "right".
Bit like cars I guess... you have to make a decision when to "give up".
I've a feeling that Garrett probably gave it their "best shot" repair - wise.
If it had a battery "leak" then it may well have gone further than the battery box and corroded parts of the circuit board itself?
Again, considering it had been left for a couple of years with the batteries in and not used... who knows how and where it had been stored? damp garage perhaps?
I get this all the time with tube amps.
Bad storage, lack of use (for one thing the capacitors "dry out"), you name it.
My advice... Ebay it as a "fixer upper".

Thanks Paul A, I was a Parts and Service Director for a new car dealership for several years and I know what you are saying about some repair jobs. Some items are just to far gone for efficient repair. A new board would probably have cost me more than the $100.00 that I paid for the detector. It was a little disappointing that they didn't advise me before the repairs, but your opinion is correct.

Sorry to hear of your probs. with the 500
I have used a White's but It only had a meter on it and I really prefer the display on the Garrett, but if you become accustomed to your "tool", Then its just as good as the next in my opinion.
Cheers

Yes I agree, the Garrett display is better than the Whites and it seems to lock on to a target better with less skipping around. Most Garretts seem to be built a little more solid also.

Unlike some companies, Garrett will work on and correct any of there machines.  Yes , Evan a BFO!

ML will not work on there older machines.

There supposed to be the best!

The two Best are Tesoro and Garrett.

I really wish Tesoro would develop a Gold Only PI machine.
