Go Up Go Down

My Sea Hunter 2 is just not doing what it normally does.  It started about a month ago and I have no idea if its me or it.

Here are the problems (keep in mind I have gone over the trouble shooting guide and followed all the normal protocols. My cable is wound tight, and connected well.  There is no moisture in the box viewed through the box window ect.

I am using an oversized head from Garret for the seahunter2 (problem happens with the original head and the oval head as well)

Air test on a gold wedding band is just 5 inches at 0 elimination and 0 threshold

It tones off when ever I change direction in the swing in mainly one direction ie from a swing from right to left it tones off, but not so much from left to right (as if I was over a target) (and no my cable is tight to the shaft and the shaft is secure and stable) ps (no matter what level of elimination I have it on)

And don't get me started on coins, unless they are a few inches in the sand I get nothing!

I know the unit is still under warranty, and I do plan on sending it out to Texas, I was just wondering if anyone else had an idea of what could be wrong.  For the guys who have this MD without warrenty.

j.

If you have not opened it do so.   Any Moister it at all?

Any rust on the pots or PCB?

Maybe your batteries are going Dead Bug.

How old is the unit?

Just over a year old, no corrosion of any kind, batteries are brand new, no moisture of any kind visible.

Contacted the repair department and they suggested on what I described to them, they feel that something might have come loose on the board.  I just wrapped it up and sending it to Texas.

Sounds like a plan.     Still Warranty.

I think you have to ship it but they ship it back? Cool

yup that is what they told me...I spoke with Myra Trammel at Garrett in Garland Texas.  The cost of shipping was about 30 bucks.  She said they have a 10 day turnaround with the detector repairs.

I did learn something new though.  In Canada, the people they send repairs too are SMI Industrial Electric in Langley BC. for detectors in Canada.  But, and this is a big butt for all the Sea Hunters and Infiniums... The only place to do repairs for these MDs is in Texas because they are a sealed unit.  Once they break open the case, they must then put it in a new case and seal it up again.  That I didn't know!

What will be interesting is the report back about what it was that made the MD no function properly.  I guess I will find out in about 2 weeks.  I'll keep everybody posted.

You've done the correct action. Garrett's customer support always exceeds my expectations and I've been dealing with them for more than 30 years now.

Since my unit is well out of warranty, I do my own repairs and have found two different occasions of a single cell in the battery pack going south. The crazy thing is, I was going on an important dive a few years ago and replaced my perfectly working 20 year old NiCads with new ones. Just to be sure, if you know what I mean. Two weeks later, a cell went dead causing the voltage to be too low and the detection range suffered just as yours did. I replaced the entire set of batteries with a new set and just a month ago, another dead cell. NiMh batteries are in it now. AAA Eneloops in a holder rather than soldered in. Packed in foam rubber since the original was Sub-C cells. These new guys are 2500mah while the NiCads were 1200mah. The summer promises to be a wet one for me.

Good luck with your repair. I look forward to hearing from you here after you get it back. Let us know what they found.

I think Garrett puts them in a Pressure chamber before sending them back too.

Make dang sure they keep water out. Cool

well you know what I'm going to give my muti reader a go here and test all my new batteries just to make sure.

Posted on: May 22, 2012, 09:03:11 PM
now keep in mind the pack needed charging but the pack of 8aa pure rechargeable alkaline (pure energy) reads at 11.47v and each cell read exactly 1.43v

not low enough to cause that low of a performance level.  A dead cell would stick out.  They are all even.  Well we eliminated that potential cause.  But a good observation none the less.

It would be best to check the batteries under load (Detector Turned On) if you could.      Don't think you can on that one without opening it.

If there was a variance of each of the cells then yes I would agree, and yes it would be possible.  Nothing about the battery pack gives me any red lights to go with a load test.  A float charge that would give a misleading voltage is short lived and this pack was in use for a couple of hours before I tested it.. so I don't think a load test would be necessary here.  Good suggestion on a fresh charged pack, but not one with 4-5 hours on it.  The float charge would have been long gone and the pack would read 10. something not 11.47
