Has anyone tried to make thier own pinpointer? I'd like to try that, I have no electrical engineering background. I do know how to solder and weld and also have experience in repairing automotive generators and alternators and doing misc. wiring projects.

I notice that when you guys are speaking about a pinpointer you must have a small detector in mind . Something like a ,,nail finder in a two x four ) ,,  you may buy in any hardware store .  No discrimination mode , just locating nails in wood . Now....if you realy want a pinpointer you should start with a good  metal detector with a pinpointer coil . Forget about the cheapo little detectors  . Unless ofcourse you want to find nails about 1 or two inches below the surface . With a PI detector you can realy use a pinpointer that is equal to your main detector and is doing the job  in sink holes , caves and just any hard toget to spots .  Just my opinion .  Cornelius

Hello Cornelius.......What I had in mind is finding a simple lo-end cheap detector w/disc. ability and disecting it. Take the main ingredients out and put them in a small hand held box with a long probe re-wired to simulate a small coil. Often times you hear off cheap detectors being sold on local radio swap shop programs for next to nothing. I just thought it would be an interesting project with some possiblities.   Thanks for your reply............John in Va..

Here is a little gem of a unit
that is dirt cheap in price, detects to 2"+, is small and can be modded for improved performance.

click here for HF Tools pinpointer probe modifications

I use one and it works well. Just make sure the probe tip is sealed from dirt and moisture entry. Mine has a pointed tip to it for easier probing, than the blunt factory one.

Thanks a lot for the information. I looked at both sites, great price and nice modification.

Its certainly no Garrett pinpointer but it works nonetheless and the mod to install a vibrator motor is cool.

 Harbor freight has pinpointers, for 13 bucks. Came with battery and case. Not a do it your self-er but cheap enough. I have a whites and a BH pinpointer. The one from harbor frieght works just as well. Hi-im also new to the forum and just wanted to drop in and say hellooo. From Chesapeake va,,,,not new to detecting.  PinPointers are great, My discovery 2 tought me that lesson. I also went to a smaller coil on that machine and got rid of that problem as it has no pin-point feature what so ever. I do the same with the XLT when Im getting tired and want to find the booty faster, or get around trash targets. Looking forward to meeting new people and reading lots of good stuff;
