What are you guys talking about? 1m? When we salvaged the Lucayan Silver wreck, we were only in 12' of water. Our lift pipes were 12' long!!! Of course we had to tie the top of the pipe down at an angle. We did have a ball valve on the suction end where the air went into an air envelope surrounding the pipe. With 6" dia. pipe, we could literally sock it to a large ballast stone and pick the stone up.

Iswald you don't need stainless steel for an airlift. Unless you want to spend $800 for the pipe, PVC is good enough. Aluminum is better and cheaper than stainless. I have built 4 air lifts and they work fine. Listen to Sedona. He knows what he is talking about. The length must be at least 4m or else it wont work. Here is a picture of a 4" airlift I made. I have been using it for 6 years and it shows no wear.

Here is a 2" airlift that hooks directly to your low pressure inflator. It works great for moving sand and there is no connection to the surface.

Christian, if your looking to build a dredge do some research first to get some idea how they work. I used to have a 6" dredge in oz and used if when diving off of piers with great success.  of course you do need a hooker diving compressor with reserve tank and filters too to remove oil and water in the air. heres a ling to keenes good luck they make good dredges but you can make something similar if you put your mind to it.

keenes used to make a good 6 inch underwater dredge too they are quite easy to build as well my 6 incher was made of galvanised iron because of rust and the nozzle was brass tubing I built riffles into the catchment box at the back it was originaly designed for the gold fields in australia but i used it around piers with great success. maybe i can find a pic of it one day
