There lies the problem....
You really need to know, what gauge of wire, actual diameter of each coil (not the outside diameter of the search head!) and the resistance of each coil.
You don't really need to know what the coils inductance are as you can work out the number of turns needed based on the coils resistance.
For instance if the coils measure,say,2 ohms and you know that 30ft of your wire measures 1 ohm and the diameter needed is say 5 inches it's pretty easy to work out how many turns.
There are charts around on the net that give the resistance of different wire qauges by length.

Making your own coil sounds like fun and easy and cheap to make to the unwary untill they find out that there is a lot more than winding a few wires around .  Unless a person  is an electronics wizz , maybe best to upgrade detector if it is an orphan brand .

Aussie,
Yep, very true.
By the time you've bought wire (pretty expensive for the amount you need) and found a suitable housing, made it waterproof etc etc it's probably cheaper to buy a secondhand coil from Ebay or somewhere.
BTW have you tried a real small coil on the Etrac at all?
I got a 5" Detech one for the Explorer - fantastic little coil for weaving in and out of trashy areas.
Surprisingly deep for such a small coil too, small roman coins from about 7" and more!

Paul
I am Using the standard 11 inch coil that came with the ETrac . Am happy with it so far  can find a copper washer 54 grains at 4 inches in ocean mud . probably could do better than that , tweeking the settings a bit more .
I found that the multi tones were sending me batty so I set it to single tone on coin setting and will go down 12 inches .   Have made this handy digger for soft ground and mud , will post some photos when I take some pics .  It realy speeded up my digging so easy I dont worry digging trash or treasure anymore . Victory

Hi Aussie,
Conditions a bit different over in Oz!
I bought the 5" on Ebay (really good price)
Got it specifically for the garden here where I live.
It's 50 yards from the church which is nearly 1000 years old, 100 yards from a medieval manor house so I figured there has to be something here.
God knows what went on in this garden (the house is 19th century) but there's bits of iron everywhere, literally every few inches.
With the standard coil the explorer went nuts!
The 5 certainly made a difference - so far 3 Roman coins, a battered 9k ring and a tudor farthing!
(and LOTS of shotgun shells.......)

Hell Paul !         You might find a couple of busted chasity belts down by the church or maybe a set of dueling pistols .  Fight
Wonder why the church and the Medievil manor were so close together  Amen maybe the mob from Medievil manor  were a sinfull lot .

At the moment i built with a friend a minipuls3 PI detector. The scematic was found on the pulsdetektor.de website (it`s all in german language). For the testing we used a coil from an old fisher detector. There are two coils in the housing and you have to connect only one to the PI detector. It worked !! But i think for a better result in the field we must built our own coil. I inform you, if the project is finished.
Greetings from Germany,
Sven
