Hello Digging,

welcome to our website. I just noticed you post hd been posted into the wrong section hence nobody probably had replied to it yet.

Well, basically it doesn't make sense to chance a coil in most cases. Your detector has been set to work best with its pre-installed coin. However the coil size does basically have the following effects:

- A larger coin is more sensitive to bigger targets and will pick them up at greater depth. It will also cover more gorund. However it will be less sensitive to small objects such as coins etc.

- A small coil covers less ground but can better pick up smaller items such as coins etc.

Most of the time it will be best to buy a new or preowned coil made for your machine rather than to bild one yourself. You would need to buy an empty housing, need some epoxy, copper wire, a cable and connectors.

Regards,

Christian

Hi all,

I am also after more info on making search coils.
In particular coils which fit PI machines. Minelab and others keep very coy about such things and there is little info available on the web.
Is some good soul would have info, other than what is provided in the link below, I'd be most grateful.

I know that ML detectors (and possible others) use different wires and probably other wizard circuitry within the coil itself. I dont really want to destray my coil to find out  Wink how they are constructed.

Sadly, I don't think there are even any aftermarket coils for the goldmaster.
I can't find anything from Detech.
Coil winding is a very tricky thing to do with any degree of success for this type of machine.
With P.I. machines it's a different matter entirely, normally they are simply a single coil loop.
Yours may well have 3 coils in there (transmit, receive and maybe "bucking" coil).
Likely as not faraday sheilding as well.
Perhaps an email to Whites? you never know!

Hi,
It's used to ensure that your receive coil only picks up signals from targets and not the transmit coil.
(If you make a "DD" coil you would overlap the transmit and receive coils and adjust their positions until you get a "Null" point - "bucking coil" is there for the same purpose on a concentric coil)

Paul
That sounds pretty complicated business you'd need  the right gauge wire , the right amount if windings there's probably a resistor or diode in there somewhere .  Is it usually sucessful try to make your own coil ?

Hi,
Double D or "DD" coils aren't too much of a problem .. Just 2 overlapping coils.
Concentric coils .... Not saying it can't be done, but I wouldn't even try!
Probably like trying to gift wrap an elephant........  Crazy
