I used a graphite spray on two of my coils and they behaved very badly after I applied the graphite.

Well, there you go. There is no theory that I have ever seen that suggests graphite is a suitable material for shielding. That's why I never said it would work. Instead, I told him where it would do the least harm.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

CarlRod, Let us know how it works after you paint it. Better yet. Set up a test before and after you paint it to see the effect it has on depth. I'm curious to hear what you find. Gambol

xavier, I tried shielding my Fisher F75 VLF coil with strips of anti-static packaging material that electrical parts come wrapped in. The depth of penetration went way down though the machine still worked. I didn't see any difference in the RF interference tested in and around my house.

This is no surprise, mate. Your field around your coil is an electrostatic field so using that kind of foam would do its best to eliminate that static. This is why I suggested only using graphite to shield the upper portion of the coil and not the lower portion. I don't believe it will have any effect on performance either way if you use it on the top only because that field is not critical to the operation. It may distort the lower field but purity of field is not an issue here in metal detecting. In the SA thread, I will be addressing the issue of Faraday shielding. A related type of post.
