I know it's hard to tell, but this is actually home made!
My new coil winder that I threw together out of scraps this afternoon. Not sure if it works yet - it winds ok (130 turns in under 5 mins), but I have to see if the rest of the plan falls into place. Not sure how well the glue is going to sit in there to hold the coils together, but if it doesn't hold up I have a few other ideas to try out.
I'll be sure to post pics when it all fails horribly  Idea

Paul

I salute your ingenuity. Your machine looks very worthy. I do question why you decided to glue it while on your form. Most people use thread or string to tie the wire together and paint glue on it in the air. Clean up is a lot easier that way.

I'm hoping to get the coil wound, check inductance, glue in place + have it come off of the form without shifting. I'd also like to be able to wind coils fairly quickly so I can experiment a little. The winding part works great, but I've no idea how the rest of it is going to work out.
The coil form is in 3 pieces and comes apart so I can pop the finished coil out of there. I might just end up accidentally gluing the whole thing together though  Tongue

Spray the Form with something like this before winding.

When you try it next, cut some grooves all around it from the outer edge towards the center. Make them very shallow cuts, but big enough to pass a needle through. Tie the coil by sewing it through these holes and then remove it before you glue it. Rather than glue it, use varnish which holds the wires together using the same thing that coats the magnet wire. Paint it in the air allowing plenty of varnish to drip down on old newspapers. That last step, the newspapers, is to keep peace with others in your house.

After both halves of your coil dry, you can use a variety of methods to mount them together. See the user named Xavier and find his coil housing thread where he describes how to make a shell from start to finish.

Great idea! And you know what? I believe I actually have a can of that in the garage. Now I just have to find it...

The current form is about 7 1/2" - because that's what size the template on the TGSL build PDF printed out at  Huh?
I'm hoping to experiment with a few different sizes, and it should only take about 20 minutes to resize the print and cut a new form. I'd like to try different winding configurations too, a low and wide coil, and a tall skinny coil perhaps. Anyone know if it makes a difference or not? I really have no idea, I'm just playing around with stuff. Different shapes might be interesting too. I know there are round and elliptical coils - how about square or butterfly shaped coils?
I know, it's probably a lot of extra work for nothing, reinventing the wheel and such, but I'm having fun and I can probably put my findings toward extra credit at college  Smiley

I like the grooves idea, that could work out really nicely with the way it's set up now. I think I'm going to go and try that out.

The old military mine detectors (early on) had square coils.  Back in the Summer 1975 issue of Treasure magazine they tested a "Roach Dicriminating Metal Detector" that had square coils on it.  Don't know about butterfly shaped coils...  what would be the point?

The point would be to find out if there's a point or not!
Really, I have no idea. I just have an overly inquisitive mind.
I figure a different shape will do something different, and if nobody else has tried it then perhaps it's about time we find out exactly what it does.
Worst case scenario we'll end up with a post that reads "Butterfly shaped coils - Bad idea!", for the benefit of future idiots trailblazers like myself who just couldn't let it go... Idiot

Here we go. Slots worked out nicely. The coil came off the form nice and easy.
Just checked inductance again though and I'm getting 6.7mH - build guide says 6.5mH.
Anyone know how close it needs to be? Should I pull a wind or two off there?
I guess I should probably hook it up the the board and check frequency first, huh?
Hmm, probably will have to wait til tomorrow now. It's past my bedtime  Exhausted

Paul.
