Thank you Homefire. What would you do if you were down under and the oxides needed to be dealt with?
Cheers.

Are you saying that iron  oxides  in the soil do or do not affect PI
machines?

It depends on the concentration of oxides and the sensitivity settings on your PI detector.

For some reason I can't fathom I can't read the latest comments here unless I use this quick  reply box. This is a shame because it is obviously a topic which arouses strong feelings.

Make sure you have JavaScript and Flash turned on. If you are using a Mac, that can be difficult becaust neither of them are native to the operating system. For Windows, just use your control panel to turn them on and then be sure your browser has them enabled.

Tnis is not a topic that arouses strong feelings. It has been discussed on these forums for years now. We are covering old ground just for you since you are new. We're being kind.

Another email notification I can't read until I write something here.

Again I am filling in this box in order to view responses. In this section "modifications ,do it yourself repairs" the topic has moved about a bit from PIs do not suffer from iron oxides in the soil to yes they do so what you have to do is buy a branded metal detector . Buying a new metal detector is a very drastic modification to make I think as a do it yourself repair. I think when the subject of hysteresis came up it should have been looked at in more detail especially the magnetizing effects of the search coil switching on to magnetize oxide and the switching off to produce the dying part of the hysteresis curve which mixes with the exponential eddy response from a metal target. Perhaps this topic if it were discussed before was on a different subject heading, perhaps discussing which brands to buy rather than what is causing the problem. I must be possible to devise a solution to the problem so that it becomes common currency for all enthusiasts not just a trade secret for the manufacturers who support your site.

Good grief. Nobody is hiding anything from you, mate. You just don't have the knowledge yet but you will if you open your mind a little. Nobody is conspiring against you. Nobody is hiding anything. I and others here have been completely forthcoming and answered every one of your questions candidly and correctly.

If you keep this kind of commentary going, you're going to find yourself moderated or even muted. Now pllease grow up and JOIN the forum discussion instead of complaining and trying to make this into a global conspiracy against you. Just read the next sentence carefully and repeat reading it until you understand.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECT METAL DETECTOR.
