What is the easiest way to turn a land hunting deytector into a water-proof unit for underwater detecting? I know Goop is used to water proof units for underwater use, but how do you encase the electronics and set control knobs into underwater housing, etc. And what about headphones for underwater use? Or even making a underwater detector for wading only with land headphones---how would you go about doing that? And what sort ofland detector models work best to use in these conversions or MODS?

Hi,
i don't want to post a neightbour's forum address, but you can have a good idea of what is possible to do with a Garrett ACE 250 if you look for the words "ACE lake looter" in any research bot.

Good question.  I wonder how waterproof some "waterproof" coils are when the vendor talks about using them on wet grass.
Does anyone have positive or negative experience with non-waterproof detectors that have "waterproof" coils?

Can you use them in 9-12 inches of water?

I have had 100's of detectors and have used them all in sallow water. Years ago I shorted out a Garrett TR coil and since then the first thing I do is seal the connection with a good silicon.

You can get a Ikelite case or a tupperware box and cut one hole for the cord and  one for the phones and let it go at that. turn it on in the sand and run it. silicone the case where the cord goes into the box or case. If u can find a water proof toggle switch u could make it to where u can shut it off and on and never open the case. The Ikelite cases are only 20 bucks and up or a tupperware bowl of some kind. Done a bunch like that in my 40 yr of detecting.Never had one leak yet.

I'll check out the Ikelite stuff, sounds interesting.  I'm not so interested in diving, or totally being underwater, but want to wade.
Yeah, that would be the safest.  However, I'm mostly interested in wading beaches, river banks, etc. and want the features available in the 'non-submersible' for the lower price.
It seems that it's the old three-factor issue....Low-Price, Features, Submersibility...Pick two (you can't have all three...right???)
You can get a lot of features for <$500 it seems, but not the submersibility.

There are 3-4 companies that sell water proof boxes and they are not high,(10-20$). Just google for them.I've been to florida about 10 times and sometimes I stop and get a plastic box at wally world etc and they work good for surf hunting use a little silicon around the fittings to box. A fella could have all the beaches to himself while the gulf oil spill is on.

Good points.  Are there good land machines that cross over well with the mineralized salt-water?  How about yours?  I hear that you lose a lot of depth if you turn down the sensitivity.
