Hi, I am hoping some of you techies out there can help me with my old detector. Just lately it has been failing on me some five minutes or so after switching on, works fine then just goes dead and no sound at all. I have tried putting brand new batteries in, checked connections etc. all looks OK there.  I thought I would check you guys here first before going to the expense of buying a new machine or expensive repairs as I only use it occasionally, it has been stored clean and dry. Oh and after I have turned it off, left it a while it comes on again OK but just for those 5 minutes again. Any ideas? much appreciated thankyou. Liz

Hi Liz,
It doesn't sound too serious, probably something pretty simple.
Where are you in the U.K?
I'm in Herts, if you aren't too far away I could take a look at it for you.
(No... I won't charge you!)  Smiley

Hello Paul,
well i am quite a way away, in the vale of Evesham, Worcs. Do you think the fault lies in the box or the coil? I have seen a chap on youtube taking a coil apart and adjusting it a bit, but it doesnt tell you what the fault is to start with.  cheers

My Guess is you have a faulty part in the power train.

Bad Battery contacts, heating up?

You said you had it stored for a long period.

Could be a Electrolytic Cap in the Power supply.

Thankyou, do you think it is something I can fix myself?

To be honest, probably not.
Unless you are familiar with fault finding and soldering, you might cause more problems.
My offer still stands if you want to cover postage both ways (just the control box and coil)
 Great

Hang on though.....
Just thought... why not contact Whites in Scotland and see what they think?
Their customer service is absolutely excellent even on older stuff.
(I had an old "beachcomber" they repaired for free!)
Here's their website:
