I have a Whites eagle spectrum unit.  The LCD display has almost no contrast making it extreamly hard to read.  I was told that it could be a bad resistor. Can anyone help me figure out what to replace?

Depending on the display itself, there might even be a variable resistor to adjust the contrast. I've used some off-the-shelf display controllers in the past that have adjustments to contrast built in. The display is custom but the controller is probably not. Your best bet is to ring White's and ask them for a local repair shop or send it back to them for repair.

Your machine is too valuable to destroy by an accidental slip of a screwdriver. Send it in for repair.

This kind of thing would trouble me only because the machine is not in perfect working order but I don't rely on the display on any of my machines.

The sad part is that you will check every day and wait for it to come back! Sad, but true.

Do you have a backup machine to use?

An additional note: White's warranty service means nothing at all. I've seen them repair detectors that were 20 years out of warranty just for the joy of seeing one of their very old, vintage machines "back on the road again!" Those folks at White's are terrific! Don't count on a free repair but do remember to thank them over and over if they only ask for return postage on your unit.

Sadly the eagle spectrum is my only unit, I will wait probably impatiently for it's return.
Thank You for all your help.

Well then. We can expect lots of activity from you here. How great for us!

You could take some pictures of your past finds and tell everyone where you found them. That should help pass the time.
