A BBC show, i guess it might be on History channel for the US audience.
It's been going for a long time, an archaeological program, they do digs at
sites around Britain and occasionally overseas, there was a great show they
did at historic Jamestown. there are some episodes on Youtube.
It's a great show if you like history and archaeology, otherwise it's a hole in
the ground and some old stuff {alt}

I don't and won't watch it for one simple reason.
Tony Robinsons sneering attitude towards detectorists.
The man is a (very) third rate "actor" NOT an archeologist, but makes himself out to be an "expert".
I find some of the conclusions jumped to on the show pretty suspect to say the least.
Otherwise - good idea for a show, but spoiled by the prat presenting it........

Hang on, Paul, I watch it simply because Tony Robinson shows a lot of respect for what the detectorists do. Are you sure you have the right program in mind? They run a detector over every scraping of the ground first of all and if they find anything, they report it on camera. Quite often they're the first to turn up a coin. He clearly counts them as part of the team.

Overall, a great show. We haven't seen it in quite a while here so I thought they might have lost funding.

got to agree here, with archeology a detector is well liked, But when the machine is used just to find somthing with out recording its historical value and context then that is different. We all can find something good but do remember it is worth a lot more if it can be tied in with something like place found area etc. Its like colecting rocks, lot more interesting if you can say it was found at hills end attached to a semi detached building buried 10" deep in sandy soil. It gives the item a historical tracable value

Mr Robinson has stated on more than a few occasions that he would like to see all detecting banned.
According to him, the only detector users should be professional "Arkies".
Good programme I guess, but can't stand the bloke.

Apparently I'm not the only one.....

Oh, I believe you, Paul. I've only seen him on Time Team and a few other shows where he doesn't give his opinion of detectorists.

I don't know why they chose Robinson, i guess they wanted someone more "in your face" or who had popular appeal than an 'unknown' archaeologist, reading the history of the show time team was developed from another show that just had the two main diggers from TT in it.
Robinson does have an attitude, it has been reported in the press on more than one occasion, but i prefer to ignore that and concentrate on the rest of it.
It's a shame he has an aversion to detecting, because without it there would be a lot of finds (and a couple of very recent spectacular finds spring to mind) that would simply have been lost forever, or ploughed into the earth and destroyed.
