Go Up Go Down

I found a badge about six months ago down here in south Georgia from the Fire Engine "SPIGGOT". The Spiggot was in service from 1841-1870 in Methuen, Mass.
After much research, most of it by Ken Doherty who wrote the history of the Methuen Fire Department, we are pretty sure that this badge was carried into the Civil War by Frederick Emerson, $th Mass. Heavy Artillery. He and seven other Methuen sodiers were among those captured at the battle of Spotsylvania in May of 1864. He was sent to Andersonville prison where he died in July, 1864 along with six more Methuen captives. Only one survived!
The site where I found this badge is about 20 miles from the prison. There is evidence that prison guards lived in the area.
So, did Frederick swap the badge for food or was it taken from him before or after he died. That I'll never know but to know that I have a momento with this provenance  makes this my most significant find in over 30 years of detecting.

Thanks for the replies. That should have read 4th Mass. Heavy Artillery. Now, if i could just find a Mass. artillery button at the same site that would be the icing on the cake.
