It's all about that magical moment of discovery when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Your only Safe place would be Private Lands with Permision in hand.

Shocked No no!  I agree with Gold Digger.  Be really careful and do ask permission to enter any private land other than Reservations.
Hunting Reservations with out permission from the proper authority will get you locked up in a mud hut making pottery for the rest of your life.

Northern New Mexico sites are monitored by New Mexico SiteWatch. They monitor sites on Fed, State and private land. All easy access sites have been recorded in detail. SiteWatch monitors would not approach a hunter but would take photos and record license numbers.  If you are seen on the site and artifacts are missing you may be served with a search warrant or worse.

Better plan is to contact the SHPO office and join SiteWatch. That way you get to see some neat sites for the purpose of preserving them.

 Crane,

Glad to hear that Sitewatch is helping to look after our history.  Iv seen some places where some idiots painted over and destroyed ancient inscriptions.  That really ticked me off to see.  If I had the time I would join the Sitewatch team myself and learn all I can before the history is wiped away.
