Hi everybody,
I'm based on Waiheke Island here in New Zealand and have never even seen a metal detector let alone picked one up,  but am already obsessed with it!

I have pre-ordered a Garrett AT Pro from the US which should be here the beginning of next month.  While waiting for it and to stop me from going completely crazy, I have be spending time researching the hobby in forums like this.  So a big thank you for all those that have posted advice and stories etc - reckon it has cut my learning period in half.

Also been hunting out potential sites on the island and have come up with a suprisingly large list of accessible and permissible areas for such a small island and an even larger list of places to look into further and where I can ask permission.

Anyway hopefully by Xmas I will be able to post pics of my own finds and sometime help others out like this forum has done for me.

Hello Islandpaddler.   Welcome to THunting.com.   I applaud you for your wise use of your time.  It will definitely payoff for you once you have received your metal detector and have learned how to use it.  We'll be eager to see the pictures.   And don't forget that we're also here to help you through the learning curve if we can.

Hello IslandPaddler

Welcome from over the Ditch  Grin

Wow  Shocked you are living in one heck of a nice part of world. Waiheke Island

As I recall you have the abandoned gun emplacements from WW2 on the island. That might be worth a try or the beaches might has some nice jewelery and coins to be found.

Worth looking at and sharpening up those detector skills.

Hardluck

Thanks for your  Welcome everyone!

I don't think I will pre-order anything again as the waiting is a killer!!   Gotta find myself a pole and cut a round plastic disk for the bottom of it so I can at least pretend Grin

Yup, the Stonybatter gun emplacements is on the "ask permission" list.  Doubt very much I will get to hunt around the tunnels themselves as the area is listed as a National Heritage site and the finds wouldn't be great because they weren't in operation for long, but close by are the potentially more lucrative sites of the camps that were built for the construction workers.  The sites of these camps are on private land and I have contacts that I can work on for getting permission.

Beach season is about to start here so I will be getting a lot of practice over the next few months!

Go Up Go Down

Hey this hobby is FUN!!

AT Pro arrived today but by the time I managed to finish work and put it together it was starting to get dark.  To bad, I was determined to give it a try so waltzed down the road to the beach and gave MD'ing a go for the first time. At first I thought I was doing something wrong as the detector was going crazy beeping away but it was in Standard mode so I couldn't see what was wrong and decided to pinpoint one of the beeps and dig.  After scraping through 10" of compacted shell with a small plastic scoop, then playing chase the target around in the sand I had dug out, I ended up with a $1NZD coin in my hand!!!  Yippee!!!! 1226 more of those and the detector would have paid for itself! (exchange rate, postage, customs, tax etc all added up)

Re-scanned the hole and just to the side "Beep".  Back into it again and an old obsolete 5c coin was popped into my pouch.  By this time it was dark but I continued relying on the freebee pinpointer that came with the detector to find out which shell was actually a coin. Gotta remember a torch next time...  After 20 minutes of hunting I walked home with 1 washer, 1x 1c, 3x 5c, 1x $1 and 1x $2 in the pouch.  All dug up within a 10 by 2 foot strip of beach.

Will hit the beach again tomorrow night - but this time with a torch!  I doubt very much that the beach has been detected before so I think it will take me a lot of hunts to cover it.  If there were that many targets in such a small area who knows what else is there?

What a great way to start, you might have Waiheke Island to yourself (or I might have to come over & give you a hand).
Would love to have a hunt around Stoney Batter, went over there about a month ago.
I'm heading up North to a west coast beach over Xmas & hope that it hasn't been hunted, I have got an older Garrett so want to get out in the shallow water.
Look forward to hearing (seeing) your finds
Cheers
P/s  Love those $$$ sounds on the beach.... soon add up Detecting Detecting

Thanks Kiwi,

I'm off to Whitianga tomorrow to spend Xmas and will now defiantly be throwing the detector into the back of the Jeep.  Should be able to escape the family for a few hunts.

I think in NZ your chances are very good that the beach has never heard a "beep".  I am interested to hear how or if the black sands on the West Coast effect the detector?
