taz,the great salt lake would be hard on any machine!!if it was me,i would put a big clear garbage bag over my detector tape the end closed and go check the old saltaire site!!a lot of history sitting in the sand there..as for lagoon i don"t think they"d mind you checking out the parking lots, enough acreage to keep a guy busy for months.esspecially if your hauling out trash! gimp55

Be very careful none the less because the shaft is not waterproof and will send water straight into the bag you so neatly taped over the control box. I'd stay away from the bag idea unless you use it to prevent a drizzle or light rain from damaging your machine. Do NOT use it thinking your machine is now safe from lake water damage.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Welcome Taz from another fellow Laytonite!  Grin
There's another guy thats also a MD not too far from us Toleary and I'm sure he wouldn't mind coming along and doing some MD with you too. We can PM each other for future hunts.. It's just too cold now for any of that, but come spring time I'll probably brush some of the dust off my Whites Classic SL II and be happy to go out huntin' with you!
Layton park is not too bad - it's close and big. Theres some places up in Ogden to go as well thats not too bad.

the bag idea is not water proof! it"s just to keep the salt air from doing any damage.i"ve worked off and on for 25+yrs, alaska bering sea, wash.coast and it"s a way to use cameras, radios for short periods without damage.the comment was made as an idea for MDing the beach.for people not familiar with the great salt lake, there was a amusement park built on the south shore in the early 1900"s that burned to the ground late 60"s..SALTAIRE was near the town of GARFIELD that was supported by the mill and refinery of kennicott copper.garfield was abandoned late 50"s and saltaire closed afterwords.growing up in the area i heard stories of saltaire being a big draw for the well healed, big bands, supper club, and the amusement rides.because of the high salt content of the sand some metals will survive better than others.any come to mind? gimp55
