I am brand-new to metal detecting and I was wondering, as I live right next to the ocean in Florida. Would the Tesoro Sand Shark with a 10 inch coil be a good starter machine for me? Thank you.

OK you beach hunters, let's get a little more into this. (asking out of ignorance an curiosity...a dangerous combo) is the 10" coil the best for this job, or do you want something smaller?

There is no detector that fit all detecting conditions. The sand shark it’s a fine machine
BUT if you expecting the goodish just popping out of the ground think again.
The machine it’s just the tool. If you learn how to use it will be a good tool.
It will talk to you. If you don’t understand it, it wound be the detectors fault.
Learn how to use the detector read the manual and practice a lot.
The finds will come

Welcome form Arizona (so take that into account).   The Tesoro sand shark is a great little machine for hunting in the water and on the beach, but you might find it a bit heavy if you decide to use it away from the beach.

I have the Tiger Shark, BA - the PI version of the all purpose detector. It's got good balance and isn't too heavy for me to go all day.

Yeah, but you've been swinging detectors for years  Smiley    A 4 pounder is a lightweight compared to some of the machines you've used.   I agree, he should be fine with it, after all it is in the same weight category as a fully load Minelab E-Trac, but wanted to let him know just in case.

Thank you guys, I am taking this all into consideration in my final purchase.

I have come down to 2 metal detectors, the Sand Shark by Tesoro, and Garrett's Sea Hunter Mark 2. I've just got to decide out of those 2.

Both are good machines and as you can see, I own a Sea Hunter and a Tiger Shark, rather than the Sand Shark. The two I own are both PI machines while the Sand Shark is VLF/TR technology. Good for almost all conditions but unstable in salt or brackish water. For that reason, I chose the PI technology. Worried about discrimination? Personally, I DO NOT advise using it but both machines have it despite being PI machines. I don't recommend it because a pop top and a gold ring are rejected equally. In the past year, I have dung over 100 gold rings that were rejected as a pop top. How do I know this? I switch on the discrimination for every target just to see. Every one of the 100 I dug were rejected. Only the biggest and chunkiest rings were not rejected.

Your choice, of course, but the PI technology is better in both worlds of dry land and water. The VLF/TR can fall over in salt conditions.
