Well, I reside in Sarasota FL and I've been debating for years about metal detecting. I collect and restore antique military weapons as my main hobby, also collect any kind of rare coins I can get my hands on ( you'd be amazed at what people would pay with at a fastfood chain when I worked there )

I just recently bought an Garrett ACE 250 for myself, and an ACE 150 for my little brother. Great They are currently being shipped to us. Yes yes, I know they are bottom tier units, but they both got great reviews, and I didn't wanna drop top dollar on something I'm not too sure about quite yet. Grin
Him and I used to Geocache together as well. So this should give us some fun.

Welcome from NM.   Don't even Under Estimate the 25o.   Those are Getter machines.

Wish they had a Volume control but there are ways around that. Cool

Welcome from Arizona (and Texas).   You'd be surprised what you can find that is related to your current hobbies.   And as Homie said, the 250 is a good machine to get you going.

Cool cool!

I got the 250 because of all the good ratings it had.

On my next to buy list ( which I'm sure will happen fast ) will be a pointer

Any other tools of the trade to look for? Clapp

depends.....if your going to hunt mostly on the beach, you'll want a scoop similar to but bigger and stronger than the scoops used to scoop up shark teeth around Venice.    If you're planning to mostly hunt more solid terrain, you're going to need some good digging implements (not necessarily big, just good and sturdy).   Home Depot, Lowes, and a few other places carry a really good 12 inch digging tool marketed for the gardens which is one of the best you can find (especially for the price).  It is usually marketed under the Ames, Jackson, or  True Temper name.   Whichever name you find it under, it will look like the one below --- btw there is one on e-bay right now for under $10.

I'm sure when I trust my detector won't be fried from salt spray ill get out to the beaches.

Usually electronics and saltwater areas don't mix too well Grin
