Since I can remember I've wanted a metal detector, but nothing I was serious about. Now, though I am ready to make the purchase. I've been searching the internet and gathering as much info as I can by myself, but now I think I need the help of some seasoned hunters. I live in Michigan surrounded by plenty of lakes and about 2 miles from Lake Michigan. Michigan was founded for it's logging and there was plenty of that going on where I live. I would appreciate any suggestions on useful detectors or ones to stay away from.

Jannie, best thing i can tell u is to find some local detectorist's in your area and question them, for what works and does not work in your area. also check and see if you have a local store selling MD's and ask lots of questions and do lots of research.

Not knowing exactly what you are wanting to find and what conditions you are hunting in , doesn't really allow the rest of us to make a good choice for you.

the choice is your based on Money, Location and conditions.
Good Luck to you. and happy hunting.

Also check the Michigan board here @ Thunting , and see what those individuals are using also.

Welcome from SE Virginia.
You might want to take a look at the Garrett AT Pro.
It is getting a bunch of good reviews!

Jannie I guess a lot depends on how much you want to spend and what you are interested in hunting.
First I would tend on staying with the big American detector company's Garrett,Tesoro,White's,fisher and so on.
Tesoro is a great detector manufacture and has a whole line of machins that will fit most hunters different needs. Also all tesoro machines carry a life time warranty and that alone is hard to beat.
If your looking for less expensive units you may check out the Bounty Hunter line.

There is actually quite a bit to decide when going to purchase a detector.

How much do you plan on using your machine? If you plan on using it 4-5 times a week or more then a more expensive unit would not be a bad thing, If you only use it a few times a year or even lose interest in the hobby then a big ticket detector would not be a good thing unless you were to resale it or hang it up above your fire place  Grin

What am I going to hunt with my detector?  Gold, silver, coinshooting, relics or what ever mineral or metal you have an interest in finding.   Most lines of detectors will cover all the different hunting needs of most.Machine operating frequency is another thing to consider once decided on what your hunting after.

Where am I going to hunt with my detector?    Land,beach,water....Is there a lot of minerals in the land?     Will you be hunting on trashy land?

This will cover some of the basics when trying to get an idea of what machine you can purchase for your hunting needs.   I'm sure that after some research and some opines from other members that you will be one step closer to making a educated decision

Hello, Jannie.   Welcome from Arizona.   Start your search by using the search box at the top right corner to search the entire forum for "best detector".   The results won't tell you which detector to get, but will give you the important questions to ask yourself and will help you decide what detector is best for you.

That being said, if you're planning on using the detector someplace where you're subject to either a rogue wave, or slipping into the water and have a moderately limited budget---make sure you have the Garrett AT-Pro on your short list.

Otherwise, pick a price point and look at Whites, Garretts, Fishers (including late model Bounty Hunters and Teknetics), Tesoros in no particular order.   If your budget allows, add Minelab to the mix.

The Garrett AT Pro is nice but if you don,t need waterproof to 10 feet you may also like the Garrett Ace350 or Garrett Ace 250. Get something with depth detection and ID. Try to get the best you can afford to start so you won,t be selling it anytime soon.
