Hi, I just purchased my first detector...a BH Fortune Hunter   I know it isn't top of the line but I want to see how I like this. I'm still trying to get it to work properly.  Haha

You have any tips or suggestions please let me know.

Thank you!

Welcome, Jlee, to the forum from Oregon!   Welcome   Get to know your detector.  Read the manual several times.  After reading it the first time, sit down with the detector and go through the manual, playing with the detector and familiarizing yourself with.   When you go out with it take a note pad and make notes about what it does, any questions you have about the detector or its performance, and things that puzzle you about it and what you like about it.  Then go through the manual again to clear up any questions or problems.   Then it is up to you to practice, practice, practice! (that means getting out and using it!) The more you use it, the more familiar you get with it and understand what it is doing.  Dig everything you get a signal on so you can learn the difference between good and bad targets.  And review your manual regularliy!   Good Luck!   And again... Welcome           Detecting

Hi jlee.

Definitely agree with ArfieBoy.   Couple that advice with getting out as often as you can and practicing as much as you can.   Patience is an important key.   There are people who have an amazing string of beginners luck and wind up finding some great items their first time out.   Most people, though, find a lot more nails, bottle caps, pull-tabs, and assorted pieces of foil than they do coins and other keepers--especially in the beginning.   Treat every outing as a learning experience.
The lessons you learn using the Bounty Hunter Fortune Hunter are going to make you an even better hunter when you eventually move up to a more advanced machine  (and hopefully by then the BH will have paid for itself).
