Well, I wouldn't say "most of us", but we do have quite a few members who build from scratch including several of our moderators (at least one of whom ONLY uses homebuilt detectors).....
anyway, welcome to THunting.com.   You're in good hands when it comes to technical advise from the folks on our Tech Talk boards.

 I'm under the impression there would be some good schematics, info and
hardware available through members and the site? I am really looking forward
to building my own.

       Actually, there is..... For most of the kind of discussions you are looking for, you'll want to spend most of your time in our Tech Talk section.   That's where you'll find "Metal Detectors" and "Modifications, Do It Yourself & Repairs".
       As for schematics, those are in the downloads section, which is only accessible to full members.   The good news is that it is really easy to become a full member.  All you need is 5 posts (either new topics or responses to other folks posts).  If you look under the flag to the left of any of your messages, you'll see your current post count.....while I'm writing this, you're at 2, so three more and you've got full access to both post to the download section and to download from it.
       As to where the download section is---look at the right side of the menu bar immediately above the post text box.   
       My suggestion to you is get over to the Tech Talk boards and see if there are a couple of projects there that look like they might interest you.  If so, join in on the thread with appropriate questions/comments and you'll have your access to the schematics within the hour.
