 Hello
Hi all , i'm a new member to this forum seeking info on buying the best value metal detector , planning on searching the old Pine Creek gold fields in Northern Territory Australia a few hours travel from home from 1871-1905 764,000 ounces of gold were extracted mainly from mining , these grounds have been gone over many times by gold seekers so probably need a deep seeker that can pick something older style detectors may have missed , thanks for any replies . cheers Mick

If money is not an object I would recommend the Minelab 5000, but of course if your not looking in the right places it wont matter what you buy.

Yes the price difference is huge, the Minelab 5000 will search deeper, is it worth the 4000 price difference, hmmmm. I suppose if you are finding that much more gold it is and with gold at 1600 an ounce a couple of ounces and it has payed for itself. I do not know what the average depth of a gold nugget found is over there. I have never used a minelab 5000 so I can not tell you for sure it will find gold that much better but the reviews are great on the machine. The only down side I have read about the minelab5000 is that it does not work well in heavy mineralized soils but the V3i or the MXT will. I do know people searching for gold have been using the V3i and also using the MXT.  The MXT is great for heavy mineralized soil hot for gold and easy to use. If your considering price the MXT is $660, less then half the V3i w/headset at $1460 but a fraction of the minelab 5000 at $5400. If I was you I would perhaps start out with the MXT or MXT Pro forget the V3i, go get some gold and see what others are using then perhaps get the Minelab5000 if you find others using it out there in the fields and go back out there again and see which one works best. It is always good to have a back up machine.

au, you know there is alot more small gold out there than there is big nuggets, and the MXT will find it, please dont think that by buying the 5000 that you will have the best advantage,
The MXT will do the job and do it well, and depending what coil you use you can fine tune it to the job in hand, But if you want a pulse machine then look at th Whites TDI Pro because all the minelab gp/gpx coils will fit it and you can tune it for general detecting also or just buy both and you will still save over 2-3000 dollars over the GPX 5000 and then you'll have all basses covered but to start off with I'd go for the MXT with the 5x10 DD coil and the 5.3 concentric coil for the tiny stuff and the STD 12"/300mm coil will go very Deep, IE Zippo lighter at over 2ft/600mm so and coins at real good depth too, I have known of nuggets coming up from great depths too, so just have a think about it and give us a call if ya stuck, all the best,
