Hi everybody.  My name's Ron and I hail from the north Georgia mountains... Dahlonega specifically.  Dahlonega was the site of the first gold rush in the US back in 1828.  Due to the volume of gold being pulled out of the mountains around here, and the difficulty of transporting it to other places, the government established a mint to produce gold coins here in 1835, and it lasted until the civil war.

Most of the surface miners picked up and took off to California when the gold rush of '49 hit, and only a few mines were left operational, mostly underground tunnel mines.  Due to the fact that surface mining was so abrubtly abandoned here in '49, there's still a lot of surface gold to be found, and that's pretty much what I focus on... scanning the dry creek beds with my GMT and sifting the black sand looking for the ever elusive sparkle of gold.  I'm excited for spring to get here and it warm up enough to hit some of the old mining sites that I have permission to hunt on.  We've had some flooding in the rivers and creeks over the fall and winter, and I know a couple of spots where stamp mills and sluices used to stand that I'm sure will have some newly uncovered treasure just waiting to be plucked from the sand.

Hi Ron & welcome! Enjoyed reading your introductory post. Dahlonega - what a great place for home turf. Good luck this spring! Do you ever spot any neat relics or old coins in addition to gold? Sue

Thanks for the warm welcome!  I haven't really gotten into hunting coins or relics, although I have found a couple of old lead bullets quite by chance while searching for gold.  I don't know anything about them.  I need to get them identified.  They're the same size and shape as your typical three ring hollow based civil war shot, except they don't have rings and don't have a hollow base.  Coin searching has basically been confined to my spare change jar, and I've found a couple of 98 WAM cents and a few other intersting coins.

I tend to ground balance my GMT so that it ignores anything other than gold, so there's no telling what I'm missing out there.  As I get older, I get more interested in the hobby, so there's no telling what the future may hold.  Cache hunting has started to intrigue me.  The old man who owned my property before I bought it died at 98, and he was a secritive old fellow, so there's no telling what he might have buried on this property.  I have 4-1/2 acres here that borders 350,000 acres of national forest, so I got a lot of property to play on.
