Welcome from New Mexico.

I moved your post as you had posted to a three year old post.

You have a much better chance with a fresh post here on finding what you seek.

Hello and welcome from Arizona.

The best place to look is any place people gathered and may have lost money.  So if you can find out where picnics used to be held or where the schools were or where the lunch wagons stopped, you're on the right track.   And like my friend GD says the strip between the sidewalk and the street, especially in the older parts of town is a good place to look.  This area is  usually public right of way---but even if it isn't it is not worth getting in a hassle with a homeowner that thinks it is his/her property.    But it does provide some good results.  I hunted a stretch with a couple of fellow detectorists this past Sunday.   We all came back with silver and wheaties (not bad in an area that only dates back to the 1900's).

Hello,
I am also from New-York state but close to Manhattan were it is very populated and kind of gave up on land detecting. You live in a great area for detecting and full of the American early history. Before you hit the fields where you have a to get the permission of the owners give time to study the local history and old maps at your local  library.

Hello Luckyp

I would try detecting down on Coney island. If you look in the back pages of Treasure legend topic there is coney island story. If you are a diver then perhaps the Hussar? See shipwrecks topic.

Hello hardluck,
I slowed on my land detection quite a fews years ago and turned into the sea..As Coney Island is concerned last place that I want to go.I have found my share and continue to do so.My island is 120 miles long by 40 wide.During the summer 10 guys on the dry and 5 on a wet. That is were the challenge is Grin.I much prefer going during the winter when my meterologiques tools tells me it is time to go.

I'm a long way from New York but live in a large city.  The most obvious places include school yards, city and county parks (if allowed) event centers like ball fields, rodeo arenas and anywhere people congregate to spend money.  I have found lots of coins in all of these places.

I'm new here too but have been at this since the 70's.....
Favorite haunts have been fairgrounds and parks, beaches and public open areas.
Remember that although a lot of these places are off limits without permission, that's an easy thing to get....people just want to know who is out there and that you won't leave any damage.

Our daughter went to college at Cornell in Ithaca...you are fortunate to live in an old area. I always wanted to detect around the speedway at Watkins Glen but never had room for the detectors on our trips out there. Many areas date way back to the Revolution and before, with lots of Civil war sites, too. Use your imagination and have fun!
Remember, you can't detect in the battlefield parks themselves, but you can usually go for it right outside the fences!

Hello,
Kind of sorry by my answer.I replied to you without knowing what detector you are using and how long you have been detecting. Why are you detecting, what kind of detection. This a part of establishing a relationship with the detecting community. As for the detecting locations the old timers in this area will really ressent it if you are given specific informations.
This is why I always felt the initial presentation is important. In this case if I have a little more details I will be glad to answer your questions.
