I'm still very green to the sport ( 2 weeks in). My Minelab 305 picks up old rifle brass in the 20-24 range. It put the machine to my wedding band and get the same reading. Is this normal? Why does some junk show 24 and 36 alternating when you pass. I usually excitedly recover a pop top on that reading.

Your seeing what you see because of the Copper!

Yes Gold Wedding Bands are hardened with Brass, Silver (THE GOOD ONES) and brass is Zinc / Copper.

Small Weding Rings show up on most machines as a Pull Tab.

I do not do TID Numbers.

They Lie.

That was just a Marketing Ploy that came out in the 70's and has became a problems with people that know the game.

I've had people Tell me they have Silver in Rocks because the Detector Says So   !    LOL it was just reporting the Sulphides of Copper, or The Combinations of other minerals within the Rock.

Your internal computer that determines the reading analyzes a few factors none of which are molecular in nature. In other words, it can't determine if the target is gold or brass or silver or copper. What it analyzes is mass over square area. Almost all of them use that kind of algorithm. The total mass over a square area of detected metal is nearly enough information to determine the shape of an object but not quite a real shape. A guess is all it can do. Your ears can be better trained by your use of your machine over time. Practice makes you better but not perfect in this case.

Hi  Detectorstuffer

Just stick around and you'll see how many people say that the detector said pull tab but when they dug it up it was a ring, bottom line is with experience you'll be able to tell more about the object in the ground that the detector so for now if it beeps DIG

The ratio between rings to pop-tops I would say is about 1:1000.Every time you dig a pop-top you getting closer to recover a gold ring. So keep digging.
The next one will be the one.

That seems to be about right for Australia. Here in the US, it's closer to 1:250. I find many more rings here than I did in Perth. MANY more.

Every time you dig a pop-top you getting closer to recover a gold ring.

That's an interesting point becauase aluminum is the one metal that defies the mass versus size rule. Because of aluminum's internal structuring, the surface builds up larger eddy currents than on any other metal making any object seem bigger when it is made from aluminum. The physics reason for that is valence electrons which offer resistance to magnetic fields internally forcing them to exist entirely on the surface.

You're getting a crash course on metalurgy today. Have fun.

There are not enough people here in Melbourne to loose things.
And since the introduction of the SD series detectors metal detecting as a hobby become very popular so there are allot more detectors users looking for them.

It's been my experience that Australians are tighter than a fishes colon. They don't drop much.
