Hey Guys and Girls.

My name is Bert and I want to take metal detecting as a hobby. Now heres the thing I am in a wheelchair and possibly have more metal in me than under me. I'm looking for a detector I could put under my chair. Can anyone recommend a good place to start looking? Probably an inexpensiveish one as this is just an experiment ATM.

Thanks, Bert.

Hi Bert,

Welcome to Thunting.com.    I'm not aware of a detector that meets your specs, but I do know that we have occassionally discussed the idea of adding a metal detector to a wheel chair.

Welcome from NM.    I can't pitcher a detector working under your chair but you can make one work to the side of it for sure.

This question begs another question. How do you plan to recover your targets? Unless you have someone with you who can dig for you, the difficulty level for you is going to be very high.

First, you can't see a coil beneath your chair well enough to pinpoint a target. Then, there's the obvious distance to the ground you must deal with. Afterwards, you must cover up after yourself. If you have someone to dig for you, just get any good detector and add a longer shaft to get it away from your chair.

Hi Bert

We had a member that did metal detecting in a wheel chair but I just can't remember who. I always wondered how he did the recovery of the item but I guess that with a small spade on a long shaft and a scoop you could get by. I hope that you wont mind me asking you this but can you use your arms?

All the best
Xavier

Ho OK I did not know that his grand son did the digging for him. I only saw a photo of him in the wheel chair holding a detector. But I'm sure that a small spade could be accommodated with a long handle and even so for a pin-pointer, a scoop should not be a problem to make either. Only problem that I can see is if the ground is too hard but even then a sort of chisel (If you see what I mean) with a long handle should solve the problem. Then on the side of the chair some clips like you use for holding fishing rods to keep all the tool nice and tidy and a finds bag hanging somewhere. I'm going to try this and see if this is plausible or not.

And I'll be more than happy to design the tools that you'll need.
