Go Up Go Down

Hi all,
I've been park hunting in Japan for about 6 years and found lots of clad and some older coins.  The ground is not kind to the coins here and most come out fairly corroded.  I have yet to find any silver coins even though I have pounded some parks that date back 150 years.  Most parks here have been resodded so they're mostly good for clad now.  I find a few square hole coins here and there but I heard they were just tossed around as worthless trinkets.  So...

I finally decided to try the beaches in January.  They are a little far but I've found beach hunting a LOT more productive than parks.  I averaged a couple rings and a few hundred dollars worth of clad a year.  My first month on a beach I got 30 rings (dry and wet sand only) and about 150.00 in clad.  Wow!  I was impressed.  Now I'm looking for more information and tips on beach and water hunting.  If the ratio is 10 to 1 water to dry then I'm expecting to have some really good ring days.

Hoping to learn and share a lot here...
kak

kak,
I started hunting here in 1991 (almost 20 years ago!!) and never thought I'd see the day when there would be competition....altough I've yet to see anyone with a 'tector. Now, there are a number of foreigners who do well here so lets keep it quiet, shall we? Just kidding! This hobby is filled with some of the best people you want to get to know and I'd love to share a hunt with you!
I'm also from the Land of Hockey, Victoria, BC, and now live in Kamisu, Ibaraki-ken along the Tone River. The main island of Honshu, for those reading this from outside Japan, is bent like an elbow and it is near this point I live.
I do a lot of beach hunting but enjoy most of all bushwhacking the old 'kaido' roads in the ancient deciduous forests which can date back 1200 years or so. One of my finds from years back, a bronze mirror from the Heian age is prominantly displayed Kashima City Hall. Lots of fun but perhaps not quite as good as our British MD'ers with their rich history. When the Romans were dropping and burying all their loot, the Japanese were just coming out of the Joman Age.....still using stone tools!

Drop a note under posts and I'll send you my e-mail.

Ian

H Ian,
I sent a reply to you email in profile.  I haven't found anything worth putting in a museum yet but I'm working on it.

Check your e-mail kak and thanks for the post.
For those of you who have seen posts by "Ian in Japan" on other forums, I am not that fine gentleman.

I like to think of myself as Ian (the  original) in Japan  :Smiley

Sand starting to pull back off the beaches here and from what I hear the beaches on the west coast (Canada). Maybe the end of the El Nino cycle will open things up. We can hope........

Ian
