Idiot Confusing sounds?....trying out my MD on our lake beach(note ...i have no idea what i am doing)....found two targets...nice clear tone (nail and pulltab)...moved up beach then i was getting tone everywhere? turned MD off and back on....would get a tone every swing when i changed directions?...at times i would hit a target that caused the tone to go completely silent. any chance someone could break down the basics for me...i know the PI picks up on everything...but the purchase was mainly to recover my lost wedding ring(which is still in the lake form last summer). i will wait till i'm confident in what im doing before trying underwater searching.

any help appreciated.

I read the manual for your machine and it looks as if the Pulse Timing will be the most helpful adjustment on it. Before you go out again and spend more time doing the same thing, try some air testing. Use a wooden or plastic table and hang the coil over the open air. Wearing as little metal as you can in the form of clothing items like belts or snaps, hold some test targets in front of the coil and see what effect each adjustment has on the material. Use coins of different sizes, rings (gold and silver) pull taps, broken off pop tabs, bobby pins, screw  caps and beer bottle tops for a wide range of targets found at beaches. The effect in air will be harsher than on the beach normally but the detector and its habits should begin revealing itself to you. By the end of a couple of cups of coffee, you should have a fairly good idea of what to be doing on the beach.

If you bought the machine second hand and don't have a manual, you can download one from White's home page here:

Wow! I just watched the videos. They're going to answer your questions perfectly. Looks as if the Gain and Pulse Timing adjustments are going to be the solution.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Thanks GD, i did get it to work better on dry sand.....(bought new)manual isn't very detailed....but with just 3 knobs i figured it couldn't be too hard...(yes it was the pulse i adjusted).

I love this site....i check "Today's Finds" almost everyday.....already wanting a land detector...but i'll have to live with my water one for now.

Good Hunting!

It is possible that the ground is setting off the detector if you are lifting at the end of your swing. Make sure you keep the same distance from the ground.
