Hello,

I am new to detecting( less than a year).  I went on my first cache hunt of a 130 year legend of stolen gold coins.  I did lots of online research and did a brief survey of area.  Then a friend and myself went on our backpacking/cache hunting weekend.  I learned a valuable lesson.  You have to talk to the locals for more info.  We were not able to locate a good site to detect without local knowledge even with research and map study.  Any advice on cache hunting would be appreciated.

Hello, jwhitley.

     Welcome to THunting.com.
The first piece of advice is study the previous posts at THunting.com very thoroughly and carefully.   The second piece of advice is the better your research before you hit the field, the better your results once you do hit the field (and the less time you waste in the field).  The third piece of advice is spend a lot of time reading---especially if you are looking for old caches....the closer to the original source (i.e. newspapers, journals, and diaries from the time, especially those written by people involved) the better your odds of success.  Just because someone lives in the area doesn't mean they can or will help you---especially if they figure out that you're looking for a cache (if they think you're interested in local history, that's a whole 'nother ball of wax).   But don't ever take anything as "gospel" without finding a way to independently verify it.
