Go Up Go Down

Hello,

I have been away from mding for quite a while and just got my detector out last week.  I have been working around my home and a neighbors yard to get back into the feel of things.

I am using a Garrett ads groundhog that I bought in the eighties when I used it quite a bit.  It is still serviceable and I have found some coins and relics and I have just been hunting for about three hours total since I restarted.

I hope to continue hunting and maybe in future purchase a newer detector.

Mike

That Garrett Groundhog has quite a reputation.   If you don't mind the weight, you might want to take your time switching to a newer detector (at least you have the "luxury" of waiting for the right bargain to come along  Smiley )

Welcome to the group.  Hope to hear from you often.

Welcome aboard from Australia.

I bought my Garrett Groundhog a long time ago and it has done me good service for all of its life. I intent to mount it in a much lighter box and shaft to ease the pain of using it. When I was much younger, I could swing it for hours and hours. Now, the old elbows get a bit cranky over that kind of abuse.

On the drawing board is a lightweight aluminum "S" shaft and an ABS plastic control box. I also want to add a rechargeable flat gel cell battery array inside the box. Surprisingly, a very small battery array will last for 60 hours of continuous tone detection. Yes, I have tested it. Lead-acid gel cells are able to maintain their voltage right down to nearly full discharge making them ideal for internal batteries. Modern LiPo batteries are great for weight but their discharge curve puts them into the short term use category.

At any rate, you have in your hands a top rated, first class machine that will hold its own against any modern detector.

Welcome from New Mexico!   Those machines in the right hand can keep pace with all but the top dollar machines of today.
