Sign up at the National Library of Australia. In about a week's time, you will receive a letter from them with your authorization code. When you enter that code, you will have access to an amazing array of on line digital texts and also have a library card which you can use at the library itself. It's not a physical card but a digital one which allows you into the archives. This site is simply the most comprehensive collection in Australia.
That being said, the Maritime Museums on both coasts have other resources available and you should consider joining them as a supporter to see their research. Both of these resources will save you lots of time.
