Tesoro Vaquero

Go Up Go Down

Greetings all from North Texas (DFW area),

I started metal detecting in the late 70s with a $40 Radio Shack Micronta 3001 (I think that?s what it was).
I did find some good stuff with it, but golly, I did dig a bunch of junk.  The Micronta gave up the ghost in the early 80s and I took a long pause from metal detecting until 4 months ago (July 2009).

I bought a Tesoro Vaquero and am well pleased.  I still feel I?m in the learning stages and now have about 100 hours of use with it.  At this point, I?m wondering if I?m developing some bad habits which I will be asking for help in future posts.

In the late 70s, early 80s, I dug everything, and as mentioned, a lot of junk.  Now, I?m a bit more particular.
First, because I have more confidence in my detector. Second, because I?m now over 50.  The ground here in North Texas can be hard as concrete during the summer (and it?s hot too) or after a rain, the ground becomes a thick heavy sticky clay.  Neither aren?t much fun to dig in plus finding a 1988 dime after digging a six inch hole aint that much of a reward for the effort (but it sure beats a bottle cap).

Anyway, I am enjoying the hobby and hope to learn a lot from all.

All the best to all,

Hi & welcome. I'm sure everyone has a few bad habits of their own. Might be fun to start a post and see who has the worst  Smiley Sue

Hay Justin,

You may find that your story is like a lot of us.

I am 60.

I metal detected on and off for a long time. I
got dissabled and had more time to take this
hobby back up. I have been hard at it for two
years now.

The Compadre and Vaquero are my favorite machines.
I have 5 Tesoroes.

Here go. Take a quick look at my photo album,

I like to find a place that should have goodies.
Tot lot, school play grounds and grounds, dirt
or gravel parking where ladies frequent, swim
beaches and around swimming pools and so on.
I do not disc out anything. I look for small sounds
that are low conductors when I am looking for gold
jewelry. Although gold can range all the way up to a
penny on the discriminator.

So, if I am in a good spot, I do not cull much.

The Vaquero will get great depth on small gold jewelry.
Gold rings may air test at close to a foot. No joke.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog
