Hello from Alberta, Canada, I hope to learn about treasure hunting among other things. It's very cold here in Alberta and it will remain cold and frozen probably until May! so in the meantime I will take hints on the hobby. My main interest is fossil collecting, mainly dino stuff and ammonites, also minerals. Smiley

Hey Fig welcome we have a nice fossil, rock and gem board that you can post some of your finds in. Some pictures of ammolites and a little info on them would be a good start.

Ammonites...never heard of them. Do they sell by the karat like diamonds? What kind of monetary value is attached to a piece the size of a one K diamond? or is it according to clarity like diamonds or not? Are there different grades of ammonite?

Ammonites are fossils that were related to squids. I have a pic on the mineral post. There are only 3 mines in the world that mine Ammolite and all are in southern Alberta. Ammolite is the precious gem material that covers the Ammonite. There are 1.6 carats of diamonds recovered per ton of rock mined and only .6 carats of Ammolite recovered per ton of rock mined making them rarer than diamonds. There are 5 carats in 1 gram. Ammolite is sold by the sq inch from $300-$500+ per sq in. There are different grades depending on colour and directionality, red being the most common, to green, orange, gold, blue, purple being the most rare. Also there are patterns, lizard skin, stained glass, pins, and sheet. Taking all these factors together gives you the quality. Here's a link to one of the mines-
