The Ace 250 is a good beginner detector.

A friend of mine got an Ace 250 at a local pawn shop that sells detectors for about $180. It is a great machine for the money. It will do just as well as the higher priced models out there.
The good thing about not paying too much for a detector is that it will pay for itself sooner and then you can sell it and upgrade later if you really want something with more bells and whistles.

Leepy, I'll tell it to you like they told it to me: If you got the cash and lots of patience to learn how to use it buy the best you can afford. Otherwise like me you just want to dig coins and rings and possibly come on some relics now and then an ace 250 is fine. I have had an ace 150 for several months and I am just now feeling confident using it. In three months I have found about a quarter pound of clad coins. a couple silver dimes and one ring. (and at least 10 lbs of trash).....I've learned a great deal about the history of the area I live in, about equipment and technique and I have encountered some interesting people that are in the hobby. MD is a hobby that can be as simple as taking a stroll or as complex and as high-tech as you want to make it. Like other worthwhile endeavors you get out of it what you put into it. gambol

Leepy, welcome aboard.   Gambol's given you some good advice.   Buy the best machine you can afford if you're pretty sure you're going to be in the hobby for the long-haul (and buying a quality used machine in good condition is worth considering as a way to stretch your funds).   But that Ace 250 seems to be a really good machine.   There are lots of posts here about how to get the best performance out of a 250 and the people that use them seem to be really pleased with them.   You might want to get a 250 with the idea of having it help pay for your next detector (but hang onto the 250 as a back up).

Hi leepy.
I have an ACE 250 and find it a great machine,I recently bought a xterra 30 of ebay and tried them both on my test bed on my back lawn,Where i have had coins buried for the last 20yrs,and the minlab didnt come close to the ACE 250,Fortunatly the dealer was a good un and returned my money.
Cheers Harmonica
