Hello Jenkins.......Welcome to THunting.

It would help if we knew what you want to hunt.   Check with your city hall or parks and recreation department to see if you can use your detector there......if they say "yes" that's a good place to start looking for coins---just make sure you carefully fill your holes back up and don't kill the grass.

I did a quick check of both the Gainesville, Georgia and the Halls county ordinances using municode (

) and didn't find any mention of metal detectors.  I also didn't see anything in the published Park Rules for Gainesville (

) that would cause problems.
From a relic hunting and history perspective.....the best advice I can give you is to spend a lot of time reading LOCAL history books and old newspapers.   They'll tell you where people used to meet for social events, circuses, revivals, etc.  And when it comes to Civil War memorablia, there's a ton of stuff that was lost off of the official battlefields---in the campsites and on the roads.   A lot of that is private land so if you can find out from the books and newspapers where the units camped and get permission from the land owners, you should have good hunting.
You'll find lots of tips if you read the topics already posted in the Beginners board.
