I am new to metal detecting, even though I will enjoy reading every one Else's posts, I think it will be hard for me to put into words what my experiences are. I will give it a shot. One of the problems I am having with my metal detector, is learning how to discriminate. I am living in and restoring one of the most historic properties in my town. It was the home of the first Mayor, that had been turned  into 7 apartments! It was built in 1857. We have, of course, removed everything that was done to make it apartments, and have gotten it to some resemblance of it's original floor plan. Not knowing how to discriminate, lead me to some finds that are significant to me. I found, about 6 inches under ground, the castings from where the original families clothes line had been! Detecting around the perimeter of the home, I found the original coal chute, that had been walled up! Not coin yet, but history, and restoring the original functions of my home, are very valuable to me. If any one has tips on discriminating, please let me know!  I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!

Welcome=and as far as the discrimination and where you describe the area, If I were there, I would not descriminate anything, because old rings, jewelry and such come in on a detector as trash-like nails and foil, so If you disc these type things out you stand a chance of missing MANY-MANY good  items, just DIGGITALL, lotta work, but to get the better, ya gotta get the bitter Wise Welcome

Thank You so much for the Welcome, Seldom. I havent been able to get off this site since becomming a member this morning! It is great fun! I look forward to reading your posts, and I think I will enjoy talking to others with the same interests. Smiley
Oh, Thank You so much, Bugar, for the welcome and all the good advice!!! Smiley I believe fully, that you are right about operating the detector in the all metal mode. The shear amount of iron in this house makes me feel crazy to do that though. I have to redo my computer, and have all of my photos on backup now, but soon, I will share photos of what I live in, and what i'm finding. I will look for your posts!!! Smiley

Hi Rus4176, you will find more by not discriminating, just like Bugar said. Not all great finds, in my opinion, are necessarily metal. Old bottles, pottery, marbles, etc are pretty awesome to discover, too. Have fun digging up history Smiley looking forward to future posts. Sue

Howdy Rus....sounds like a fun place to search....and I agree---dig everything (after all, it IS in your best interest to get all the junk out anyway)
