Go Up Go Down

Semi-new to gold, gem and fossil hunting. A couple years but just a few outings. Panned and sluiced for gold in North Carolina 3 times and California once. Have done two group gold digs in North Carolina. Did not have much time in California to do much there.  "Gem mined" in North Carolina at the two natural mines. (Did not care much for the idea of the enhanced mines.) Locally not much in our area so it's just vacation part timer here. Recently picked up a couple metal detectors one for my wife and I. Hoping to get more of a chance to use them. Member of the local gem and mineral association for the last three years.

Welcome from the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon!  Good luck with the detectors.  I've had a lot of fun and enjoyment from mine over the years.  Great

Where are you located?  What brand and model of detectors do you have?  Detecting

Howdie homefire and arfieboy.

I'm in Houston, Texas.

We have a couple ace 250's. Figured that would be a decent starter point so both of us would have one. Later on will probably pick up at least one better one. We have only done a little at school yard's, beach and  a couple parks. Have not found much other then some change, oldest coin a 1930's buffalo nickel, a trinket off a bracelet, and a 6" by 5" piece of sheet copper probably from a patch on a boat. (Could be off a roof can't tell.) Almost forgot a bunch of roof nails in our yard since we decided to try them around the house first.

The 250's are supposed to be great starting detectors. I've never used them, so I have no personal experience with them, but everything I hear is good.  You have already made a great find with the Buffalo nickel.  Great

Good luck with your detecting, to both of you!  Detecting

Homefire hate to report it, but last time I drove thru New Mexico I did not have a good time. We rented an rv for a trip to Las vegas. So it was just a drive thru. We were getting low on gas and the map showed a little town coming up. When we made it there saw it appeared to be abandoned. (Now if I would have had a metal detector and the time it could have been a great find. ) Drive down the road further to the next town and it starts hailing. Make it to a town one gallon away from being completely empty. And that is cutting it in a 31 foot rv. We do plan on doing more trips toward the west coast so we will probably make it back to New Mexico and have a chance to have some fun. I'm retired now so a little more time on my hands.

Grin I know a few towns like that in New Mexico.....especially on the roads between Clovis and Albuquerque.

Welcome to THunting.com.   When you decide to move up in the detector world, hang on to at least one of the Ace 250s as a backup unit.  They are rapidly making a name for themselves as a reliable classic.  Easy to learn but you can spend a lifetime mastering its "hidden" capabilities (the one's the casual user doesn't take the time to learn).   Lot's of our long time members have one they keep as a back up to their usual detector.

I was trying to talk my wife in to going ahead and getting one just a better grade. Where's that snowball at? But the dealer did give us a price break, so can't say much.
