hat's a very dangerous question you been asking Xaver

Well, as Pgill will tell you, X leads a rather isolated life.  Almost monkish.   As for the AT pro, as long as he isn't going deeper than 3 meters, he should be fine.    But I'd take it in stages.  If he is going deeper, you'll have to spend quite a bit more and go for something designed for diving.

Did I mention he is quite a geek? He is a physicist and wants to properly understand the mechanisms behind the detectors. Can anyone recommend a good web site complete with equations please?

Also, there is a Garrett Ace 250 available at a very reasonable price that we have seen. Any advice on this one? I understand we could 'upgrade' it a bit with different coils and the reviews I've seen have been good. Sorry, I feel like I only ask questions and take from this site with nothing to give back. Thanks for your help though!

Hello from New York & Welcome aboard the forum!  Smiley

All the guys and gals here will give you great advice on brand/model options of which detectors to look for and buy for your searching desires, but you have options here one being an all weather machine that can get wet, or also a great land & beach machine that gets the job done that can also search the beach and surf as long as you protect the control box that you could add a Vinyl cover if its wet or damp outside to help protect it. You also have full fledged submersible machines to consider.

I would suggest not jumping into this new hobby right off the Bat with buying a brand new expensive machine, but reccommend a great quality used machine in the various brand/models mentioned and get use to the hobby a bit first. You can then always step up and upgrade to a new machine if that's what you decide.

Whites & Minelab machines have a great reputation there in the UK and England.

All Right Then, well a very (high quality & cost effective) machine to look at is a used Whites machine. A superb unit with great features & control options would be the very well regarded Whites 5900 Di Pro SL or the 6000 Di Pro SL, both are black color boxes. Many prefer the 5900 Di pro SL for it's manual tuning control for Ground Balance as do I. This machine is a dead on accurate & solid high quality machine that are more than well noted in your area to be extremely easy to use, and have the good nick fortune of great successful finds for their many owners there in the UK.

Hope my small amount of advice helps you & Welcome to T'hunting, were glad to have you here!

Cheers-  Great
