Welcome from Arizona.    So what part of New Mexico are you in?   We've got a couple of active members from the Deming area and a bunch of other members either currently in the Albuquerque area or with history there.

I am in Albuquerque keep running into people detecting while I walk my dogs, think maybe it might be something to get into while the dogs sniff out stuff I can sniff out coins.

Lot's of interesting spots in Albuquerque---just stay off the reservations (although if you can get permission to hunt the Old Indian School property down at 12th St and Menaul, you might just find some things my mom and my grandparents left behind.   You can download the current city park ordinances at

.   I don't see anything that specifically bans metal detecting BUT depending upon what tools you use and who interprets the regulations the following could be used to prevent you from metal detecting:
"(2)     Removal of Natural Resources.  No person in a park shall dig or remove any beach sand, whether submerged or not, or any soil, rock, stones, trees, shrubs or plants, down timber or other wood or materials, or make any excavation by tool, equipment, blasting, or other means or agency."
or
"No person in a park shall damage, cut, carve, transplant or remove any tree or plant or injure the bark or pick the flowers or seeds, of any tree or plant.  Nor shall any person attach any rope, wire, or other contrivance to any tree or plant.  A person shall not dig in or otherwise disturb grass areas to the detriment of these areas, or in any way injure or impair the natural beauty or usefulness of any area, provided that normal use of grassed areas will not be prohibited.  Exception is here made as to any regularly authorized party acting by and under the authority and regulation of the Mayor."
However, that does seem to leave room open for "popping" coins using a straight bladed screw driver since that isn't excavating and does not damage the grass when done properly.   If so, there are some very nice old parks down close to the OLD Albuquerque High School (speaking of which if you could get permission to hunt there from the current owners, there is no telling what you can find since it was in use as a school from 1914 to 1974).

Have yet to find a metal detector I want, going to start with something relatively inexpensive like a Tesoro silver umax or a Fisher f2 but haven't narrowed it down, doing lots of reading and got leads to a group that meets here at a community center 1st Tuesdays of the month. But any helpful advice will be appreciated.

The Tesoro silver sabre umax would be an excellent choice.   If you want to have a graphic display, you would be better off with the Fisher F4 than with the Fisher F2.   Check out the Teknetics Delta 4000 made by the same people as make the Fishers.  My personal choice would be the Tesoro although my wife is getting good results from our F4

Hello, and Welcome from Utah! Happy Hunting down there in NM. Are you going to go for that treasure chest (somewhere near Santa Fe) worth millions in gems/gold/jewelry? Did you read about the news story on that?
