With the BLM, it is ok assuming you don't run afoul of the ARPA laws.   So a lot is going to depend upon how liberal the BLM is with the rules in your area.   As for the National Forests, I'd check them on a NF by NF case.....some are more restrictive than others.....and even with them you got ARPA to deal with.

From what I've experienced and read, the Tahoe National Forest Regs are pretty common

Good point, I don't think that'll be too much of a problem when you're talking about coins that fall out of peoples pockets wether it be a couple years ago, or 100 years ago.
