Go Up Go Down

Hey there.. I am living in SW Virginia, just bought my first metal detector.  The wife and I were going to take a stab at a new hobby.  Anyone have any ideas on areas in this location that we might try?  Any good reads, or legends we might familiarize ourselves with?  She is the historian, I am native to the Washington County Smyth County area, and I know all the ends in outs of the back country... Just because I have run my hounds all over the place since I was a pup myself.  thanks guys! Hello

Howdy,

I'm far away, so I can't give you any specific leads, but I can give you some suggestions about where to start.
First, I did a quick web search on Washington County, Virginia.  Seems as though you're in the kind of area a lot of us further west would give our eye teeth to be able to search.   You should be able to find colonial, revolutionary war, civil war, and every era since represented in your area.
Second, get with your wife to pour over some of the books written by locals on the history of small communities in your area.  They'll usually give you some leads.  An example of these kind of books would be Cleveland on the Clinch by Kathy Shearer.  The reason I'm suggesting getting with your wife to pour over the books together is they'll be descriptions of places in there that you might recognize from running the hounds and you can mark them up on maps before you go out.
Speaking of maps, besides having a full set of current maps, you'll probably want to get your hands on the oldest maps you can (as you can find them and afford them).   They'll give you an idea of how the land and the roads have changed and help you find towns, settlements, farms, etc. that don't exist anymore.
Most of all get out there with your detector and start looking, especially at places you think you'd camp, settle, rest at, or use regularly for some other purpose.

Good luck and keep us posted.

BA

Welcome from Pa! The first place I would start is any old school you can find with a playground maybe from the late 60's on back. Hit the area around the swings real good I find a lot of gold and silver there. And make yourself a test garden by burying coins of different types, nails and foil or tabs. That way you can get used to the detector make a map of your garden telling you what is what ,and at what depth. Thats how I got better at it, plus lots of patience! Foiled Again
