Go Up Go Down

Hello, they call me Bear Man because my name is Barry. I am from the Southern Tier of NY and currently living in Henrietta, NY (Rochester). I am gold junkie and have always collected relics. The problem I face is that in NY even though the S.Tier is sparsely populated it is very difficult to find sites to explore. I am not into hanging around with groups so I prefer to search alone or with family. If anyone can tell me of open places of possible opportunity to hunt for treasure/relics with out any or very little red tape involved it would be greatly appreciated.

Join your local historical society and discover where the old swimming holes used to be. Old picnic grounds, disused fairgrounds, agricultural showgrounds and sporting activity fields can be located. Before there were fancy parks, there were clearings in forests. Early schoolhouses, former churches and grange buildings that are crumbling to the ground today were once bubbling with activity.

Your historical society will also be able to tell you where troop movements were during the War of 1812 and the American Revolution. The troops all traveled overland and had to camp somewhere to assemble before battles. You might not even be near a battlefield but you can be sure there was movement through there. The Underground Railway also has its roots deeply embedded in that area as slaves made good their escape. In the 1920s through 1960s, road work, railroad track laying and Civilian Conservation Corps work camps were set up throughout the USA, including your area.

Don't forget Boy Scout Camps, Girl Scout Camps and Church Camps which had thousands of kids dropping things for decades. The circus and carnivals returned year after year to the same open space. Perhaps they still do.

It's all a matter of finding the spots where that occurred. Your local library is a huge source of leads for treasure hunting. If they carry the Yellow Pages from the 1950s, you can find where many of these places I mentioned above used to stand.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
