Go Up Go Down

Just joined recently. Reside in Western Australia and gold nugget prospecting is my interest. Want to learn all I can about detecting. Have great fun getting out into the isolated places I go, beats an office any day!! I am going to start making my own coils and so I am sourcing suppliers for wire, coil covers etc. Should be interesting?!?!?

Welcome OzzyGold, This board seems to attract a lot of Australians and quite a few Britts and a suprising number of build-it-yourselfers.

I'm intrigued at the idea of winding my own coil. How do you determining how many turns?. I don't have an L/C meter just a crude homemade comparator and I'm not sure that would work. Any advice?

I have helped make coils before myself...pouring epoxy and such. Good luck! and good treasure hunting.

Just a bit North of you. Well, a short 16 hour drive, Pilbara region!!  Where do you normally hunt?

Well, I never get up to your neck of the woods. Beaches, parks, tot lots and the verge in old neighborhoods are my favorite spots. A friend has a mining lease near Koolgardie which he works. I haven't been there with him yet. Probably over winter.

Ozzygold, These are two fantastic links on coils. I'm going to try it asap. Thanks. First thing I'm going to try is a small coil for trashy areas. I have a Garrett 150  and It blinds very quickly when you get in a iron rich soil. Garrett sell one. I believe its called a "hot shot". I'll let you know how (if) mine works. Thanks again.
