Hello to everyone out there that enjoys this great hobby. Here in NC, you have a wide variety of detecting areas. Beach hunting is fun, so is detecting sold home sites and my favorite is hunting forgotten town sites. Look forward to hearing from you all.

"Hunting forgotten town sites" aka "ghost-towning".....yep, that a blast---especially when you can find one that either isn't in any of the books or at least isn't generally known.

Glad to have you here.    We look forward to reading your posts.

Yup,
The reason I call them forgotten, is because unlike the ghost towns of the west and southwest, we have little left of the towns other than some foundation bricks or stones. Even in the county records, we have communities that were on the map and then in the next few years there is nothing. And I guess in those days, finished wood was a prime item, so people would take apart buildings for the wood and bricks. One farm house that a buddy and I detected around had been built from a larger house and for some reason or another, was rolled on logs to 2 different locations before it was located where it is now. Gotta love no electricity or indoor plumbing.

unfortunately most of the ghost towns in the west fall into the same category as yours... It's really relatively rare (and getting more so) that you can actually find recognizeable ghost towns (probaly 1 in 5 has recognizeable foundations and 1 in 10 have anything resembling shells of buildings).....it's a pity.....but then again, people don't get as upset when you wander around foundations as they tend to if you're wandering around more substantial structures.

Hope to see some of your finds from these forgotten sites.
